3 July 2023.
Women On the Move Against Cancer (WOMAC) is pleased to confirm The Oesophageal Patients Association (OPA) and Cure Leukaemia as its 2024 charities and fundraising kicks off today for the duo with #WOMACWeeks - a dedicated fortnight of fundraising from 3-16 July 2023.
Both charities were nominated by Committee members or Patrons of WOMAC thanks to the support they have provided to loved ones during a cancer diagnosis and treatment.
OPA has led the fight against oesophageal and gastric cancers for over 30 years supporting patients, families and carers while also raising awareness of these cancers and their prevention.
The statistics speak for themselves:
Cure Leukaemia was established in 2003 with the mission to allow patients with blood cancer in the Birmingham region to access new treatments.
Since then, the charity has expanded to a national level offering potentially life-saving treatments to patients across the UK.
In 2020, Cure Leukaemia began a three-year £3 million commitment to funding the Trials Acceleration Programme (TAP) that allows a catchment of 20 million NHS patients to be connected to treatments that would otherwise not be available to them through standard care.
There are now 15 centres within the TAP network across the UK, a figure that Cure Leukaemia hopes to grow with the support of organisations like WOMAC and other donors.
In total, 40,000 people are diagnosed with a blood cancer every year making these kinds of centres and the treatments they provide so important.
Fundraising for these two incredible causes starts with #WOMACWeeks from today until 16 July 2023 and this year #WOMACWalk will form part of the efforts.
Patrons of WOMAC will be walking 10,000 steps per day for the full two weeks for donations.
But it doesn’t stop there!
Fundraising efforts will also come from friends of WOMAC taking on challenges or organising fun activities to raise money, for example, cake sales, car washes, office sports days, running, cycling and swimming challenges and much more besides, all in a bid to raise funds for causes supporting those going through a cancer diagnosis.
Georgia Fox, Chair of WOMAC, said: “I’m delighted to be able to announce our two charities for this year which are both such worthy causes.
The funds raised will be used to support people in their time of need and I’m looking forward to seeing what we can deliver together through #WOMACWeeks and beyond as we also look ahead to our annual fundraiser - the WOMAC Party.”
Don’t forget to use #WOMACWeeks and/or #WOMACWalks to show your activity in action and tag the WOMAC social channels as follows:
