Women on the move against cancer provides £15,000 to brainstrust in 2021

14 December 2021.

As 2021 comes to a close, Women On the Move Against Cancer (WOMAC) has donated a staggering £15,000 to its 2021 charity, brainstrust, thanks to the generous donations of people far and wide.

brainstrust supports patients, caregivers and families facing a life-limiting brain tumour diagnosis, through offering practical advice and emotional support to improve their mental well-being.

Activities throughout the year have included WOMAC Weeks, which saw people organise bake sales, complete sponsored swims and much much more; the London Landmarks half marathon taken on by WOMAC Patrons and supporters; silent auctions; and a tombola at the Ace Café’s Ladies Day.

Although the 2021 annual party sadly couldn’t go ahead due to the pandemic, an amazing amount has been raised thanks to the efforts of people taking on these challenges and fundraising initiatives.

The money raised has funded various areas of the support brainstrust provides people who have a brain tumour, including the cost of providing 125 brain boxes, supporting the charity’s Wonderful Memories appeal honouring memories of those no longer with us, as well as funding a number of workshops and counselling sessions.

Jane Gardiner, Head of Support, brainstrust said: “We are so grateful to WOMAC for their continued support for people living with a brain tumour and their families.

The specialist counselling sessions that WOMAC has chosen to fund will support people whose diagnosis has caused them psychological distress and problems with day-to-day living.

At a time when access to psychological services can be challenging, WOMAC are ensuring rapid access to our specialist service at the point when people need it the most.”

One of brainstrusts’ patients added: “Your help has been monumental to me in working through my thoughts and understanding of the disease.

You have helped me gain a perspective on what has happened and to look at things in a new light.

Thank you so very much for all your time and kindness.”

Georgia Fox, Chair of WOMAC, said: “I’m so delighted that we have been able to support brainstrust with incredible donations in a year which has been tough for many.

The generosity of our Patrons, friends and the wider community never ceases to amaze me.

“To hear these words from brainstrust and know how much of a difference WOMAC has made to those 30 people in the UK diagnosed with a brain tumour everyday, as well as their support network, means everything and makes the hard work of this fantastic group of women so worthwhile.”

Plans for 2022 are already in place and WOMAC will soon announce its 2022 charities alongside information about its annual party.

About brainstrustA brain tumour diagnosis is frightening, isolating and has a devastating social impact. brainstrust helps patients, their families and carers to navigate the uncertainties that a diagnosis brings.

Many face mental health, cognition, dexterity and mobility challenges because of either the tumour itself or the treatment, and must learn to accept a new normal which is different to the life they have established.

It is a distressing and bewildering experience, and that is where brainstrust helps.

brainstrust provides personalised support and builds resources that help people with a brain tumour and their loved ones live the life they want to after diagnosis.

They work with people in the clinical setting to secure the best possible care for people with a brain tumour and campaign to solve real issues, because they understand the challenges faced by the brain tumour community.
